Lenten Reflections 2024 - Week Two

Sometimes I listen to the Sunday readings, and I think “Yeah, yeah. I know this story, I know what happens, I got this”. They are so familiar; I struggle to hear them in a new way. But, just as Peter, James and John were called to a high mountain, by themselves, I think God is calling us to journey to that higher place, a new perspective, as we look at the spiritual nutrition in today’s readings.

The first reading is a call to trust and obey, being willing to go and do as God asks, as Abraham did in not withholding his only, beloved son Isaac, trusting in God’s love and goodness, with a resulting promise of abundant blessings; descendants, possessions and blessings that are passed on to all nations and people.

The second reading reminds us that God is on our side, even if we fail, God acquits, declaring us “not guilty”. God gave up His own beloved son Jesus, who died for us and now intercedes for us. They have given us everything we need. They are 100% behind us, seeking to remain connected with us if only we choose to trust and believe.

The gospel takes us up that high mountain, away by ourselves—away from the distractions of the world and opens us to a whole new way to see and understand. It’s so easy to forget and take our relationship with God flippantly. We forget WHO we are speaking to—our Creator, the Creator of the universe and everything in it, who values us enough to seek us out and calls us into a love relationship with Himself. We are so small and insignificant and yet God chooses to reveal Himself to us by sending us His Son, Jesus, and telling us “This is My Beloved Son”. God then tells us to “Listen to Him.” Next, He chooses to use us, He empowers us through this revelation, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, if only we will take the time to listen and learn from Him, to obey, to bring that Good News to all the world. His desire is that all would come to know Him, seek forgiveness, and be saved. Cursillistas, we have been to the mountain, we have seen His glory, the time to share the Good News is now. Invite someone to the upcoming Cursillo April 25-28, take them up that mountain to experience God’s incredible love and mercy!
