Advent Reflection 2024 - Week 1

What Can I Offer You, Lord?

Advent traditionally has become my time for self-examination and reflection; this is the time I set aside to review my personal worldview. This year, thanks to an amazing Men’s weekend in late October, I was inspired to start my reflection ahead of schedule. It was at Camp Overlook, where the Lord reminded me, we are all called to be Apostles in our time.

This first revelation of the weekend truly challenged me; after all, “what can I offer the Lord?” As we enter the second quarter of the 21st century, we are challenged with the fact that, a high percentage of the population is living without faith to guide them. The environment, especially in the western world, has become increasingly dismissive towards people of faith. Increasingly more people are seeking a materialistic, secular approach to personal fulfillment. As a result, fewer people would even bother to ask, “What can I offer the Lord?”

Coincidentally, last year, I added the following statement to my worldview: “I believe that without a faith-based, moral foundation for justice, society falls into chaos.”

So, what can I offer the Lord? I received a personal answer from the lord, while on team at Camp Overlook:

“In a world where our leaders profess condemnation and confrontation, be the voice of transformation.”

This single statement has occupied my thoughts ever since. Now, what can I do to transform the prevailing attitudes of society in this current generation?

As Saint Francis has taught us:

  • Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
  • Where there is injury, pardon;
  • Where there is doubt, faith;
  • Where there is despair, hope;
  • Where There is darkness, light;
  • Where there is sadnesses, joy.
