Lenten Relfection - Week One

A LENT LIKE NO OTHER

By now we have all been overly exposed to the headlines, tweets, Facebook and Instagram posts, blog posts, and so much more.

Regardless of our political or spiritual preferences and opinions, I would guess that you are feeling much the same way as I am….Exhausted.

Our communities, country, and the world all seem to be in a state of chaos.

So, what shall we do this Lenten Season? Pray, Fast, Give Alms? It’s a good start.

In the Gospel Reading for this First Sunday in Lent we hear the familiar story of Jesus being tempted in the desert for 40 days. I often must remind myself that Jesus asks us to follow him (not just worship him). So, let’s give it a whirl, shall we?

THE THREE P’S

My Spiritual Mentor, Msgr. Chester Michael (Fr, Chet) was consistently reminding me (and you) of the intoxicating power of the Three P’s. Power, Pleasure, and Possessions. Just as Jesus was tempted for those 40 days, I believe He is asking us to follow his example and focus on those temptations that are all around us every day of our lives.

Power

Where is power creating an influence in my daily life? Do I stress out if I feel out of control? Do I secretly delight in feeling that my thoughts and opinions are the only way forward? Is my side winning? Where is God in these thoughts and struggles?

Pleasure

What pleasures are in control of my life? We all have our little pleasures that seep into our psyches on a regular basis (at least I do), Try to be very self-aware during this Lenten Season as to how these are interfering with one’s spiritual journey.

Possessions

Uh oh! I had to bring that one up, didn’t I? What weight do I give to my lifestyle and actions for financial security? Are my actions in line with what Jesus asks of us in the Gospels? How am I sharing my bounty with others? What am I being overly protective of losing or giving away?

This Lent, in the midst of all the turmoil and chaos that we face, let us be mindful of how these Three P’s are influencing one’s Spiritual Journey and how they might transform each of us in a positive way for the service of Love. Love of our God and Love of our Neighbor (no exceptions).

In it with you,

Tom
