Lenten Reflection - Week 5 2024
Being asked to reflect on the theme of “Spiritual Nutrition” seems a bit daunting to me this year. After all, we are talking Death as the ultimate sacrifice here. Not my favorite subject for sure. It seems to me that we are being asked to follow a very difficult path. That of being asked to Die to Self to Live.
The Gospel shares Jesus' parable of the grain of wheat, showing us the necessity of sacrifice for the greater good. This lesson is a tough one, offering us a chance to ponder personal growth through sacrifice. We are encouraged to reflect on what we might need to abandon—habits, attitudes, or selfish desires—to foster spiritual growth and a closer alignment with God's will. This powerful image helps us understand the transformative power of sacrifice, expressing the meaning of Lent and preparing our hearts for the resurrection promise.
The Paschal Mystery, central to our faith and highlighted during the 5th Sunday of Lent, captures God's profound plan for humanity's redemption through Jesus Christ - by His passion, death, resurrection, and ascension. This mystery assures us that death is not the end, but a passage to a more glorious existence. Jesus' analogy of the grain of wheat dying to produce abundant fruit serves as a powerful reminder that our own sacrifices and trials can lead to spiritual growth and eternal life.
In what ways are we being called to serve others and make sacrifices for the sake of the Kingdom of God? How can our sacrifices, even if they seem small, bring glory to God and build His kingdom on earth?
Our sacrifices may not be as dramatic as those of Jesus, but they are still important. It may involve giving up our time, talents, or resources to serve others. It may involve forgiving someone who has hurt us or putting the needs of others before our own.
As we prepare for Holy Week and Easter, let’s be willing to set aside our own desires and pray for the Grace to follow Jesus.
